Scope of Government Jobs for Engineering students

Studying Engineering often opens gates towards a wide range of jobs. An Engineer gets a vast choice of options to select their type of work, type of job when compared to other career pursuers. With the constant evolution, Engineers are not limited to traditional sectors like mechanical, electrical or chemical, but they have the opportunity to endeavour the journey of computers, telecommunication, thermal, polymer and many more. Also, Engineers have the option of bagging government jobs. Getting a government job is like a golden chance for anyone, mostly the Indians. Government Jobs for Mechanical/ Civil/ Electrical/ Electronics Engineers -When an Engineer is looking forward to work in the core branch of his/her studies in the government sector, then it is better to give the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) exam. PSUs generally tend to recruit through GATE exam scores, however, there are some other profiles where recruitment is not done through GATE scores. BHEL Engineer Trainee -An Engineer must have a Full-time Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or 5 years of integrated dual or master degree certificates to apply for the position. Selection is done through Computer-based exam and interview procedure and the selected candidate gets a salary of Rs 50,000 per month at the beginning, which ranges between Rs 60,000 - Rs 1,80,000 with further development.

Junior Engineer in Food Corporation of India (FCI) -This position is selected through Paper 1 and Paper 2 Skill Test. Engineers between 18-40 years of age with a degree in respective engineering branch and 1-year experience can apply for this position. The employed get a pay scale ranging from Rs 11,100 - 29,950.

Also, Engineers of the above-mentioned departments can get a job as a Port Trust and State Public Service Commission.

Government Jobs for Computer Science/ Information Technology Engineers –Engineers who are pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Technology can aim for government jobs. Here are some of the career options -

Scientific/Technical Assitant - Ministry of Electronics and ITThe selection is done through an OMR based written exam of two papers - Computer Science and General Knowledge and Aptitude. The selected ones bag a salary of Rs 56100 - Rs 177500, which is similar to Level 10 grade.

Young India Professional in NITI AayogThis job is on a contract basis for 2 years and applications are submitted online only. The selection is made through Resume review and walk-in interviews. An Engineer with a maximum age of 32 years and a Graduation degree can aim for this job, which has a monthly salary of Rs 60,000.

Apart from these, an Engineer from CS/IT department can also bag a job as a Delhi Development Authority and in Allahabad Bank. The selections are done through exams and interview and the selected candidates are paid handsomely.

Government Jobs for all streams -Apart from all the above-mentioned jobs, some Government Jobs are accessible to all the Engineering branches and are considered among the coveted services.

UPSC Forest Services -Any Engineer with a legit degree from any stream is eligible for appearing in the exam. The selection procedure involves the Prelims stage where the cut off for the IFS is decided through the UPSC CSE prelims exam, Written Exam (2 optional subjects apart from English Language and General Knowledge) and lastly, Personality Test. With a gross salary of around Rs 50,000 per month with deductions, an Engineer can aim for this job.

State Public Service Commission (Civil Service Exam) -For appearing in this job, an Engineer must have a graduation degree from any stream from a recognised university. The selection procedure and the salary for this vary from state to state.

RBI Grade BReserve Bank of India Grade B exams is for Graduates from any stream from a recognised institute. Through 3 phase of the exam including Prelims Stage, Written Exam and Personality Test, a selected candidate gets a job worth Rs 68,000 - Rs 70,000 with other perks, Housing allowance and others.

Senior Section Engineer/ Junior Engineer in Indian Railways Board -An Engineer with a maximum of 34 years of age is eligible for applying to this job. The selection procedure involves Tier 1,2,3 exams involving computer-based, technical and interview tests. The selected candidate gets a salary of around Rs 50,000 per month.

Indian Army (Technical Graduate Course) -Vacancies for the Indian army depends on the various disciplines and the cut off percentage in engineering is fixed by the Ministry of Defence. A certain level of physical standards and maintained and the final round involves an interview process.
